Education
Educational freedom is constitutionally guaranteed. Public education is secular, free and obligatory.
Literacy rate
97% Uruguay has the highest literacy rate in all of Latin America and one of the highest in the world.
Language
Spanish is the official language. English and Portuguese is spoken in the main tourist centers.
Religion
No official religion exists. The Constitution guarantees
freedom of worship. Diverse religions coexist in our
country, however, Catholicism is the predominant religion
among Uruguayans.

Gervasio Artigas).
July 18th (Swearing of the first Constitution of 1830).
August 25th (Declaration of Independence).
Crime Information
Street crime is not a serious problem at the capital,
Montevideo. Evertheless, walking alone or in small groups
is not recommended in the downtown area, Old City (Ciudad
Vieja) and the neightborhoods surrounding the port zone,
after dark, or even during the day in well-traveled
areas on the weekends.
