Art
Candombe (African influenced rhythms played
on the tabor or drum) and Tango, predominantly occupy
the popular feeling of city music, its maximum expression
being "La Cumparsita", composed by Gerardo
Mattos Rodriguez in a cafe in Montevideo by the same
name.
Sports
Most sports are played in Uruguay, however fútbol
(soccer) is the sport and passion of the Uruguayan people
and has been a symbol that has represented Uruguay in
the world.
Among the championships obtained
by the Uruguayan National Team "Celeste" are
the Olympics of 1924 and 1928 (validated by FIFA as
World Cups), the first World Cup Jules Rimet in 1930
(inaugurating the Estadio Centenario de Montevideo,
declared by FIFA "Historical Monument of World
Soccer") and in 1950 in Maracana (Brazil).
Its two most successful league
teams Nacional and Peñarol have captured the
Intercontinental (the South American team champion versus
the European team champion) six times (1961, 66 and
82 Peñarol; 1971, 80 and 88 Nacional).
Only four teams in all the world
won this Cup three times: Nacional, Peñarol,
Real Madrid and Milan (Ita).
